Making a money bowl is one of the easiest spells you can do! Basically, you take a bowl or vessel and fill it with things you associate with attracting wealth, you tend to it on a regular basis, and you refresh it at least once a month. It can be as simple or complex as you feel called to make it, and even better, you can likely put one together now without spending a dime!
What Is The Purpose Of A Money Bowl?
Also called a prosperity or a wealth bowl, a money bowl is made to positively improve one’s finances. This can be done through attracting more money and/or holding on to the money you already have. Money bowls are found in many cultural practices, both ancient and modern, in one form or another. Examples can be found in Feng Shui practices, Southern and Appalachian Folklore, and Hoodoo traditions. Unsurprisingly, every culture wants more money!
Basic Money Bowl Items
Making a money bowl is straight forward, but you can add in as many ritual elements as you want!
First you will need to collect all your items and tools:
- A vessel. This can be a bowl, trinket box, jar, anything you’d like! Pick something that speaks to you. For example, I have a hand made ceramic bowl (seen in the at the top of the page) that I use for my main money bowl.
- Bay leaves or paper to write a short petition and a pen. This isn’t required but is frequently used.
- Candles or other methods for charging your money bowl.
- Cleansing materials, like incense, moon water, herbal sprays, or anything else you normally use. You can do energy work as well if that is a part of your practice.
- Magical helpers and offerings. This can be crystals, herbs, oils, talismans, or other charms. Check further below for a more in depth list! The sky is the limit, you can add as much or as little as you feel called to do.
- And finally items to represent money, or money itself. I always put a few dollar bills in it to start, always more than a single bill! It makes me think of the end of bank run scene in the movie Its A Wonderful Life. They joke about having two bills left and how these two bills will hopefully “breed like rabbits”. You’re going to want the exact same thing!
How To Make A Basic Money Bowl
The basic process is as follows:
- Collect all the things we just talked about.
- Find a good spot to safely keep your bowl. You will want to make sure that you walk by it every day!
- Cleanse the space that will hold your vessel, cleanse your offerings and other ingredients, and cleanse your vessel. I like to cleanse myself before beginning my ritual but this isn’t necessary. As you are cleansing your space and items focus on pushing out any problematic issues you might have with money. Above all, push away any negative thoughts you have around your finances and future.
- Next you add your ingredients to your vessel. I recommend telling each item what is meant to do. Otherwise, how is it supposed to know what is expected of it?
- Then add your petition. A good petition will be worded with the focus on already having what you need. For example, even if I still owe on my student loans I may write “My student loans are paid. I have all the money I need and want. I am smart with my finances. My money works for my benefit.” You’ll run out of room on a bay leaf so just write key words like “Paid In Full, Enough, Financially Smart.”
- Now we need to charge our bowl! Personally, I use candles, but feel free to do whatever fits your practice. I use green candles SAFELY put in the center of my bowl. I use a small jar candle for this, so there’s no chance of wax igniting any herbs.
- Once your bowl is charged you should be good to go!

My Easiest Top Picks To Add To A Money Bowl
If you add nothing else to your bowl I strongly suggest the following:
- Cinnamon Sticks, super cheap in the Hispanic section of most grocery stores!
- Two dollar bills
- A rubber band, lightly wrapped around the bills so your money bounces back to you.
Herbs And Spices For Your Money Bowl
Check out my other post on using premade spice mixes for herbal magic, many are good for money magic!
- Cinnamon – brings wealth
- Bay – for manifestation
- Salt – to cleanse negativity
- Catnip – to attract money
- Rose of Jericho – to resurrect finances
- Italian Seasoning – luck in building wealth
Remember, you don’t need all of these herbs and you are free to add others!
Crystals and Minerals For Your Money Bowl
My personal go to is pyrite, also known as fools gold.
- Pyrite, mimics money so it attracts it
- Magnets or loadstone, pulls money to you
- Jade, used historically in Asia to attract wealth
- Malachite, attracts money
- Citrine, attracts money, both green and other shades
Honestly, there’s a ton of green crystals that represents money. If you have some green crystals I’d recommend googling the name of it to see if it is connected! Again, this is a short list. you don’t need everything, or anything, on this list and you are more than welcomed to add more!
Miscellaneous Things To Add To Your Money Bowl
My favorite thing to add is pocket change or things that make me think of money. I got a Waluigi coin from some Super Mario candy recently that I keep in my bowl. Waluigi is one of my favorite characters so that feels even more fortunate to me than if it had been Luigi or Toad. I also save bottle caps from both soda and beer to toss into my bowl. I’m a huge gamer so it reminds me of the caps they use in Fallout in place of dollars.
- Any item that you would randomly come across that could represent money, like my bottle caps
- Change given at the store
- Dollar bills
- Lucky keychains or other charms, gator paws and rabbits feet are popular and they don’t have to be real! You can get fake rabbits feet online or at dollar stores. Chances are, if you’re only paying a dollar or two it’s made out of cardboard and fake fur. That’s ok, it’s all about symbolism!
- Trinkets that represent money and abundance, for example I have a tiny stone elephant. Elephants are seen as bringers of good luck and prosperity in parts of the world.
- Rice or oats, represents abundance. You’ll see lucky green rice used as well!
What Should You Not Put In A Money Bowl?
Trash. Do not put trash in your money bowl. Many people will keep their money bowl near their door and empty their wallet and pocket change directly into the bowl. This is a great way to keep energy moving, but it can also make it easy to drop trash in the bowl too. Be mindful about what you put into your bowl, you don’t want to accidentally put pocket lint.
You also do not want dust to settle in it either, and you can help prevent this just by stirring the contents around with your finger every couple days.
When Is The Best Time To Make A Money Bowl?
I’d rather you start your money bowl now, and be benefiting from it, than wait for the “perfect” timing. It’s like investing, the best time is yesterday haha! That being said there are a few days that are popular for making and refreshing money bowls.
- Thursday, the day is ruled by Jupiter and Jupiter has a strong connection with prosperity and wealth
- Full Moon, you can tap into the powerful energy of the moon
- First day of the month, good for setting manifestations and intentions for the next month
- Pay day, good for setting manifestations and intentions particularly with your own personal finances
I do mine on the first day of the month but I’ve also done it on pay day.
Where Is The Best Place To Put A Money Bowl?
Most people put their money bowl by their front door, but basically you want it to be somewhere you can see it every day but it is safe from being tipped over. Tipping over your money bowl is not a good omen!
- By the front door, to pull in money from the outside
- In your bed room, easy to see every morning and easy to work into a regular routine of interacting with it (dropping your spare change in it or leaving your wallet on it for example)
- In your home office, this is where my money altar is and where I put my bowl. This helps encourage your work to bring in abundence
- On your money altar, your money altar can be all the same places as mentioned above. Don’t forget that your money bowl will fit nicely at an altar too!
